EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Residents of Grandview Tower are receiving help from local volunteers after a fire last month damaged their apartments and destroyed some of their belongings.
At least six people couldn't move back home after that fire on August 26th.
On Wednesday, some local volunteers are breaking out their cleaning supplies to help those who nearly lost it all.
Dozens of people were forced from their homes for nearly three days after that deadly fire that killed a woman on the first floor.
At 7:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, at least 15 volunteers from Alcoa put in some elbow grease, scrubbing and cleaning off items like toys, kitchen supplies, headboards, and beds.
Those items are from the six apartments still being worked on.
Slay's Restoration donated the work space and supplies.
One volunteer knows first-hand what helping out means for those affected.
"Giving back to the community. My mother had a fire at one time and someone did this for her," said Tamara Wagner-Marion, an Alcoa volunteer.
"We greatly appreciate the community and these two organizations coming together to help these individuals that were affected," said Ali Langen with the Red Cross.
As of Wednesday afternoon, volunteers were on the second of the six apartments.
The Red Cross says volunteers with the United Way of Caring will continue the work on Friday.
No word yet on when those residents will be able to move back home.
