Humans aren't only ones diagnosed with West Nile

INDIANA (WFIE) -

According to the CDC, this year's West Nile Virus outbreak is the worst in US history. That goes for humans and animals.

The Vanderburgh County Health Department officials are urging horse owners to be vigilant about making sure their animals are vaccinated against the West Nile Virus.

Officials say three horses in Indiana have already been diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease. That's compared with 722 cases that were reported in Indiana in 2002, the year the virus was first found in the state.

Officials say the key to keeping the number of horses infected by the virus down is the widespread use of vaccinations, as well as diligence in eliminating mosquito breeding sites.

"A real probable point are the horse troughs themselves. They need to be changed out because they will breed actually in the horses water," said Keith Goy with the Vanderburgh County Health Department. "Of course, at a horse area, there's not a lot of vegetation. They tend to really pound down the soil and you tend to get a lot of depressions that will hold water also."

They say there really are no symptoms with horses and West Nile. They say the best thing you can do is contact your vet.
