Preliminary hearing set for teen in Hopkins Co. murder case

HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE) -

We could know next month whether a Hopkins County teenager accused of murder and attempted murder will be charged as an adult.

A preliminary hearing has been set for October 8.

That preliminary hearing was supposed to be sometime last week or early this week, officials say more time was needed due to the magnitude of the case.

Just over a week ago, Kentucky State Police charged a 16-year-old boy with the murder of 45-year-old Rose Riley, and the attempted murder of 51-year-old Keith Riley.

Keith riley has been upgraded to serious condition at the University of Louisville Hospital.

Officials say the incident happened outside the Riley's home when the juvenile, who is related to the victims opened fire.

County Attorney Todd P'Pool says this juvenile could certainly face charges as an adult.

"Anytime you have a juvenile over the age of 14 who commits an offense with a firearm, the statute will automatically trigger and it becomes an adult case. So, you do have to have a probable cause hearing and we're going to do that next month," P'Pool said.

The juvenile will stay at the Warren County Juvenile Detention Center until his court date next month.
