EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Fireworks that had been banned on the 4th of July lit up the sky on Labor Day.

Drought conditions kept Evansville residents from shooting off their fireworks on Independence Day, but on Monday night, under an amended city ordinance, personal fireworks are good to go.

Chances are if you go outside you'll hear them and see them.  Fireworks that folks can finally use.

On Bayard Park Drive in Evansville, it's a celebration more fitting of the 4th of July.

"Actually every neighbor but one is out here right now," said Jared Pleuss.

Pleuss and his neighbors grilled out before bringing out hundreds of dollars worth of fireworks that have been boxed up since July.

"We've called the sheriff's and everything every other week making sure whenever we can and can't, and finally last night, my wife found out that we could," Pleuss said.

So those boxes packed full with all different kinds of fireworks and sparklers came out of the closet and took center stage right in the middle of the neighborhood.

"When they said between 5:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., at 5:02 we were shooting stuff up," Pleuss said.

On the other side of Evansville, in a large parking lot, more than just fireworks were being celebrated.

"It's exciting because it's my birthday, so we get to have a bit more of a celebration," said Anna Dupont.

Dupont invited her friends and family along to help celebrate turning 27 and the fact that all that money she spent on fireworks earlier in the year didn't go to waste.

"We didn't just want them to sit in the closet for a year, bring them out next year and they possibly not work," Dupont said.

Under the city's ordinance, residents have to stop setting off fireworks by 11:00 p.m. Monday night.
