Head out to the green and golf for a good cause

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

The Owensboro Police Department is holding its annual D.A.R.E. Golf Scramble today.

The event is being held out at Ben Hawes Golf Course in Owensboro.

The scramble kicked off Friday morning at 8 and benefits the OPD's Crime Prevention Unit.

That's the division in charge of programs that reach out to community youth.

Some of those include the Juvenile Diversion Program and Camp K.O.P.S.

Those programs couldn't exist on their own, this event provides the money that's necessary to keep them up and running.

"This is the major fundraiser that we have for the police department and in order for us to provide the funds to the crime prevention unit," said Officer Michael Hathaway. "Like I said, it's not only the D.A.R.E. program in the schools, but we've also recently started a program called Character Counts in the schools."

If you are heading out to the green today, the department is giving away prizes for skills like longest drive and longest putt.

So feel free to show off your skills!
