VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) -

Vanderburgh County Commissioners have cut funding to the Human Relations Commission by 20%.

The Human Relations Commission investigates charges of discrimination in areas of employment, education, and housing. The commission is funded by the city of Evansville and Vanderburgh County.

The county's contribution this year is $47,000.

County Commissioners say they decided to cut funding after the Executive Director, Dianne Clements told them the agency does most of its work in the city, not the county.

"The few people who are unhappy about it are unhappy about it because they think it's a statement about the Human Relations Commission, which it is not," said Vanderburgh County Commissioner Marsha Abell. "It's a statement about our statement as county executives. We can only fund things that we have control over, otherwise we are taxing people without giving them representation."

Executive Director Diana Clements says she doesn't recall a conversation with commissioners about where the HRC's work is based and tells 14 News she would like to sit down with commissioners to talk to them about the important work of the Human Relations Commission.
