OHIO CO, KY (WFIE) -
The Kentucky Sheriff's Deputy of the Year is from Ohio County.
The sheriff's office has changed a lot in Ohio County since Sheriff David Thompson took over. Now, it can call Deputy Brandon Boone one of the best.
Over the past year and a half, the Ohio County Sheriff's Office has received new patrol cars, added a new evidence storage locker, acquired better equipment in a new dispatch center, bullet proof vest, and have worked themselves into better shape.
"We want to make this place the best law enforcement agency in the state of Kentucky," Sheriff Thompson told 14 News.
It's certainly on its way, as the sheriff's office found out Thursday that Deputy Brandon Boone has been named the Kentucky Sheriff's Office Deputy of the Year.
"Law enforcement is not an easy job to get," said Deputy Boone. "I tried for six years to get into a law enforcement agency. Just because we don't have the numbers don't mean we can't do big things."
"It's really one of the proudest days I've had since I've been in law enforcement," Sheriff Thompson said. "There's several people in this office that could be deputy of the year."
Sheriff Thompson says he nominated Deputy Boone for his excellent military career.
"November of '07 to October of '08 I went to Iraq," Boone told 14 News. "Two tours overseas there."
His "top shot" award in Kentucky, and for a recent case Boone helped solve where two alleged killers from Michigan were on the loose in Ohio County Boone saw two people walking down highway 69 and confronted them.
"We into a foot pursuit and surely there after we caught the female and took her to the car," Boone recalled.
Shortly after that, the male suspect was caught and after questioning the two admitted to killing two people in Michigan.
"I survived a war and am raising a kid. I'm not going to go down without a fight," said Boone.
Deputy Boone's father also served in law enforcement. Thursday a special moment for that father and son.
