Development moves forward for Mechanicsville revitalization

DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE) -

Development continues to move forward on new homes scheduled to be built in a Mechanicsville neighborhood.

Janice and Dani Duncan live a few blocks away from where the Omega Street Extension is taking place.

Janice says she thinks the homes will be good for the neighborhood, but on one big condition.

"If they can afford them... Yes," said Janice.

Construction on the Omega Street Extension is in full force. As soon as the road is ready, homes will start to take shape.

The extension will have many benefits.

Keith Free director of Owensboro Community Development said, "It's gonna increase response times for emergency services, plus give a nice, new attractive entry into the neighborhood, and with the extra property that we have along the roadway, it's given us the opportunity to construct affordable housing."

The extension will connect to McFarland Avenue at the intersection of Washington Avenue.

The Duncans are both excited about what could come along with new homes and new neighbors.

"I guess...bring more people in...you'll get to meet new people," said Dani Duncan.

"It's a great idea," said Janice Duncan. "It'll be a bigger community and a lot of other people living around here."

All homes will be leased for 15 years and at the end of that time the resident will have the option to buy.
