EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Summer is coming to a close, and so are the public pools.
In fact, it's only a matter of days until it's too late to get in that last summer swim.
Evansville city pools stayed busy this summer with the hot temps, but now that we're approaching September, many are gearing up to close down.
Labor Day is just a few days away and that's the weekend the pools typically close.
The Department of Parks and Recreation says many neighborhood pools closed down in mid July, but some of the bigger park pools like Mosby and Rochelle remained open.
Executive Director of the Parks and Recreation Department Denise Johnson says now that pool season is officially coming to a close, it's time to prepare for next year.
"They will open approximately the same time next year and it's typically a week after Memorial Day. We've gotten a lot of requests to look at doing that a little bit sooner," Johnson said. "Some of the issues are the same we had with keeping the pools open longer, staffing issues. A lot of our staff are actually employed as teachers or they're college students and high school students, so we may at some point look at the reversal and do weekends only until school is out, college kids are home, and teachers are ready to help us out."
Sunday is the last day for the remaining pools to be open. Mosby and Rochelle are both open 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. that day.
