PERRY CO., IN (WFIE) -

The search continues for a hit and run driver after a deadly accident on Interstate 64.

Indiana State Police say 64-year-old Kenneth Derr died in that accident. They tell us, in hit and run situations, tips from the public can make all the difference in finding the suspect vehicle.

Indiana State Police say just before 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, Kenneth Derr and his brother Michael pulled off the shoulder of Interstate 64 west near mile marker 73 to change a flat tire on their trailer.

"A vehicle came across the fogline, hit him, and just continued on, never stopped," said ISP PIO Sgt. Chad Dick.

Police say the brothers' trailer and jeep weren't damaged, and Michael came away with no injuries. Kenneth died at the scene.

ISP says, at this time, they have no reason to believe the hit and run was intentional, but they don't yet know for sure. Officials say I-64 is a rural interstate, and isn't too heavily traveled, which makes searching for a suspect even harder.

"That's part of the issue is there's not a lot of witnesses to tell us, you know, what they saw and better descriptions of the vehicle," said Sgt. Dick.

Sgt. Dick says the Derrs did what they should to change the tire, moving as far past the fogline as they could.

He says, to help prevent situations like this one, drivers should make sure to give people on the side of the road room to repair their vehicles.

"The vehicle could be from California or it could be a local vehicle right here, and that's what, that's the hard part is, we just don't know where that vehicle went to after it hit Mr. Derr."

Anyone that witnessed the crash or has information is asked to call the ISP Jasper Post at (812) 482-1441 or 800-742-7475.
