WARRICK CO., IN (WFIE) -

Orthopaedic Associates of Evansville is presenting two "Live Well" grants to some local schools this week and they're coming as a surprise.

One presentation was given this morning in Newburgh.

Miss Barrie Hughes teaches life skills at Newburgh Elementary. She applied for a Live Well grant, with specific requests.

"She handles some of the more profound, severe disabilities. She wrote and said she needed a Wii and a Wii Fit," said Kelly Wonder with Orthopaedic Associates of Evansville. "We were really touched by that and knew those students could use it so in addition to getting the Wii and the Wii Fit, we also got games and additional accessories."

"I have a lot of students in wheel chairs so they're limited to what they can do physically so this will give them some options to participate as much as they can," said Hughes.

It wasn't until today that Hughes and her students found out they were being granted the request.

She says the Wii system and games will help her students stay active on days when they can't go outside.

"A lot of times if it's really hot outside or if it's cold, our kids can't tolerate the temps as well so this will give us something to be active with and give us something to do that's fun for them," said Hughes.

"Doing the Wii allows every child to participate regardless if they have full physical capabilities," said Wonder.

Orthopaedic Associates awards the grants to schools within Vanderburgh, Warrick, Posey and Henderson Counties who are working to achieve wellness within the classroom.

"They just tell us what they need and how it will achieve wellness goals for their school and we pick kind of what we think will serve those needs best," said Wonder.

Another grant will be given to a local school on Wednesday.
