Residents and officials VOICE ideas for a better Evansville

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

The second of Evansville's Voice community wide visioning sessions was held on Monday night.

Residents shared their ideas on how to better the city.

Dozens of people turned out at Helfrich Park Stem Academy on West Maryland Street to voice their ideas for the city's future on Monday night.

Community leaders and the mayor were there to listen.

From improving parks.

"I would like to see a cleaner Evansville," said VOICE attendee, Jim Bradley.

To simply being better neighbors.

"How can we bring people together," asked Leadership Evansville member, Makenzie Coulter.

More than two dozen community members voiced their ideas on how they see Evansville in the years to come.

"Everyone kind of walks in with a different experience and you get that when a bunch of people come together," Coulter said.

"I think, once this is done to see what happens, see if they go through with it," Bradley said.

On paper, VOICE organizers gathered ideas about what should be left behind, and what the city should carry forward.

"Already after one meeting, we had some tremendous ideas," Mayor Lloyd Winnecke said. "We're really literally giving people a chance to share what they like, what they don't like, and what they think we can improve upon in our city."

Organizers say success has been seen elsewhere like Chattanooga, Tennessee. A similar program there led to a new aquarium, a cultural center, and much more.

Leaders here say Evansville has the same potential.

"Our hope is to draw these ideas out to help build a great future for the city," Winnecke said.

This is only the second of many VOICE sessions they're hoping to hold.

The next will be held Sunday the 25th.
