Well-being check in leads EPD to marijuana bust

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Police say they found a large marijuana grow operation inside an Evansville home, and the man who lives there is accused of raising more than 100 marijuana plants.

Police say that man is 29-year-old Anthony Wright, who lives on Powell Avenue. They say Wright is diabetic, and that the whole thing started when his car was found abandoned in Henderson.

According to a police affidavit, Wright's car was spotted abandoned and crashed in the Henderson river bottoms camp site last Wednesday.

Concerned for Wright's well-being, Evansville Police went to his home on East Powell.

"When officers got there, they couldn't get anybody to come to the door. They spoke with some neighbors. They told the officers that the person that lived there had some medical conditions," said Jason Cullum with the Evansville Police.

Police say since they had reasonable concern for Wright's well-being, they entered his home through an unlocked back door.

"They did locate the person they were looking for in an upstairs bedroom. But while checking the home for him, they located some narcotics stuff in plain view. Particularly, some marijuana plants that were being grown in the basement," Cullum said.

According to the affidavit, police obtained a search warrant and seized $2,000 and 122 marijuana plants, as well as multiple tools and ingredients for the grow.

Megan Haug says she has lived near the home for about 20 years, and says she is surprised to hear about such a large drug operation just yards away from her home.

"I wasn't here when it happened, but I heard about it from other neighbors. I've known the families that lived in that house before, and so, I mean, I think it's pretty crazy. It's not something you expect to be happening in your neighborhood," Haug said.

Other neighbors say Wright did have children living in the home, but police say no children were there during the arrest and marijuana bust.

"You're setting a horrible example for your kids. How can you do something like that, but then expect your kids to follow your rules, if you're obviously not following society's rules?" Cullum said.

Police say this is still an ongoing investigation, as they will be looking into where and how Wright found the means to conduct the marijuana grow.
