Vanderburgh Co. Health Dept. battles bloodsuckers

Posted: Updated:

The Vanderburgh County Health Department is on the hunt for mosquitos.

As long as the rain holds off, they'll be spraying adult mosquitos Thursday in high populated areas.

That fogging will start around 8 Thursday night and will be done by midnight.

One spot is bordered by Washington Avenue, down Boeke, over on Covert and up Rotherwood.

The second is bound by Bellemeade Avenue, Boeke Road, Washington Avenue, and South Rotherwood Avenue.

The health department has some tips to reduce your chances of coming into contact with mosquitoes:

  • When outside, especially near dusk and dawn, always use insect repellant.
  • Also, make sure screens on doors, windows, and porches are in good repair. Even the smallest holes can let in mosquitoes.
  • Reduce breeding habitats by emptying buckets, removing discarded tires, and changing the water in wading pools and bird baths once a week.
  • Finally, keep the grass cut and landscaping trimmed because adult mosquitoes use overgrown areas as safe places to rest.

The health department plans to hand out flyers about the virus to some residents in the city.
