EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
It was back to school today for thousands of EVSC students, and some students had a special guest ride with them to school.
It's a tradition that goes way back. On the first day of each school year, the superintendent of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation hops on the big yellow bus with the students and goes to school.
"The bus ride is fun. The kids are eager and well behaved, ready to come back to school," Smith said.
This year the destination was Vogel Elementary.
Smith says the bus ride is a great way to start the school year, getting to interact with the students.
Smith says the beginning of a new year is always exciting. This year, the EVSC will embrace a few changes.
"We're implementing response intervention. It's a three to five year roll out of really how we do business for our kids. We've also opened up the Academy of Innovative Studies, a new campus," Smith said.
We caught up with Vogel parent Amy Foster, who says things went smoothly for the first day.
"My youngest isn't a morning person, so it was tough getting him out of bed. But we had breakfast and made it on time, so it was good," Foster said.
Dr. Smith says something else on parent's minds as the school year starts is safety, and he wants to assure parents their kids are secure.
"I feel very confident in our security procedures. So much in fact, that I have a son that goes to our schools and a wife that teaches in our schools," Smith said.
Now that all EVSC schools are in session, school officials are reminding you to watch out for students on your morning and afternoon commutes.
