Sgt. Shanna Hornung, a Kentucky National Guard member and American Legion Rider has been waiting two long years to come home, and Thursday you can help welcome her back.
On June 5th, 2010, she was on her third tour of duty, this time in Afghanistan, when she was severely injured by an IED while driving her truck on a convoy.
She sustained a broken back and many other injuries, but she survived.
"With injuries comes a lot of hardships with it. Always kept her game face on and was ready to get moving," said Maria Hamby.
She's been in rehab at Ft. Campbell for the past two years. She will be turning in her room key this Thursday morning, and heading back home to Warrick County.
"It's great to see such a wonderful girl come home," Hamby said.
Hamby was one of Shanna's teachers at Roger's Academy of Hair in Evansville and tells 14 News that Shanna has always been devoted to her country and to anything she puts her mind to.
"It's a pretty emotional moment for me. I know others feel the same way and we're just going to make sure she feels welcome," said Dave Noble with American Legion Riders.
Friends tell 14 News that even though Shanna's injuries prevent her from standing long periods of time, she gives back by giving haircuts to homeless veterans.
Just another reason friends say they're calling her a hero.
"After 19 years, she's now getting out of the Army and we hope to see a lot more of her around here," Noble said.
Newburgh Post 44 American Legion Riders are heading to Ft. Campbell to pick her up on their bikes. They are meeting at the Thorntons on the Henderson strip about a half mile past the welcome center at 6 A.M.
The Newburgh Fire Department has been asked to meet the Riders at Exit 5 on I-164 to join the escort.
Local American Legion Riders, Patriot Guard, Harley Owners Group (AKA: HOG) , Rolling Thunder, and Christian Motorcycles of America (AKA: CMA) have also been invited to help with this very special mission.
The Riders will meet at Ellis Park parking lot about 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, August 16th. They will then escort her to the Newburgh American Legion for a reception.
