OPD gives O'boro residents a look into police work

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

The Owensboro Police Department is giving the public an inside look at what they do every day.

It's all part of their Citizens Police Academy and registration is underway.

It is a 12 week class and residents really get to see what most people throughout the city don't have the opportunity to.

Just to give you an example of a few of the topics discussed in the class, they include learning about criminal investigations, polygraph, narcotics, and officer safety.

Some of the more hands on sessions include a firearms demonstration, arrest and handcuffing procedures, and DUI portable breath tests.

Each week, everyone in the class meets on Thursdays from 6 to 9 at the Owensboro Police Department.

The first session gets underway in just over a week and it goes until November 8.

Officers say it's a way for residents to really get to know them as a department and improve communication with the public through a wide variety of topics.

"For instance one night we may have tours of the department where a speaker will actually guide the tour and tell them what departments that they're looking at, what happens at each department," said Officer Michael Hathaway. "Another night of the course might be a canine demonstration from our canine officers. So we have various departments that will actually come out and speak with the citizens."

Registration is limited but the department is currently accepting applications.
