Negotiations continue for Big Rivers and Century Aluminum

HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) -

The negotiations between Big Rivers Electric and Century Aluminum continue.

The two sides met last week, and in that meeting, Big Rivers officials tells 14 News the power company offered to give century $34 million in short rate relief over the next several years. But, the aluminum company countered with $110 million request.

"They're saying they need relief within their electric rates, so because of it they're wanting some concessions to be made. Because of that, the only way we can give them the concessions is to raise everyone else's rates, but that would mean massive rate increases for others. That's something that's pretty uncomfortable for us to do," said Marty Littrel, communications manager at Big Rivers.

Big Rivers knows Century is facing a tough market, and says they hope they don't lose Century as a customer.
