OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

On Tuesday, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear announced a new vet tech program at Owensboro's Community and Technical College.

The vet tech degree will be a two year program that will start next fall. It's the first vet tech two year program to be offered at a Kentucky community college.

Officials say the new program will be funded using a multi-county coal severance grant. OCTC leaders say there's a huge vet tech need in Kentucky with large livestock.

"We've had an overwhelming amount of interest from students who want to get the prerequisites because they'll be some science and math prerequisites they'll have to take before they can be admitted into the program," said OCTC president Jim Klauber.

The vet program will take place at OCTC Frederica campus.
