Police:"violent felon" had a gun with an altered serial number

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Evansville Police have arrested 26-year-old William Thomas on multiple charges after officers responded to a shots fired call.

A man told officers that Thomas had shot at him near the intersection of SE 6th St and Chandler Ave.

Officers found a bullet hole in the victim's car. He told officers Thomas was in a maroon Mercury SUV and left the area.

Officers spotted the SUV near Lodge and Washington and tried to pull it over. The driver refused to stop and led officers on a slow speed pursuit to the intersection of Morgan and Weinbach.

Officers identified the driver as William Thomas and placed him into custody.

 An empty holster was found in the SUV. Officers checking the area where the SUV was first spotted located a handgun.

Thomas was arrested on the following charges:
Possession of a Handgun by a Serious Violent Felon (previous dealing meth conviction)
Possession of an Altered Handgun (serial number was altered)
Resisting Law Enforcement Criminal Recklessness (two counts)
Driving without ever receiving a license
