Big Rivers wants to hear your opinion on electric bill increase

HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) -

Henderson residents may see their electric bills go up.

Big Rivers is holding a public hearing Tuesday to let residents listen to their plans, and voice their opinions.

Big Rivers Electric Corporation is holding a public meeting at 1:00 p.m. at the Henderson Community College.

With new federal regulations on coal fire generating plants, Big Rivers must comply with tougher air quality standards.

Under Kentucky law, Big Rivers can pass costs onto its customers.

Kenergy is one of the companies that Big Rivers supplies power to and its customers could see a rate hike down the road.

"There would be no rate impact until 2016. At that point, the industrial customers would see an impact in the six to eight percent range. The residential and small commercial customers would not see any impact until 2018. It would probably be somewhere as a percent increase in the high single digits," said Andrew Melnykovich with Kentucky Public Service Commission.

Once again, the meeting at Henderson Community College begins at 1:00 p.m. with an information session and then public comment begins at 2:00 p.m.
