Health Department hoping to reopen community dental clinic

VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) -

The Vanderburgh County Health Department says it's doing all it can to reopen its community dental clinic.

The clinic, which serves low-income residents, closed on August 1st.

Health Officer Dr. Ray Nicholson says the department ran out of money to pay its staff.

He says the Health Department was relying on reserve funds to keep the clinic open, but now the clinic needs $100,000.

"The type of clinic that we're operating cannot be self-sustaining. It just does not make enough money to stay open so the community needs it and the community's going to have to come forward in some way with the funds for it," Dr. Nicholson said.

Dr. Nicholson says the earliest he sees the dental clinic reopening is a few months from now.

He says the department will ask the County Council for more funds.
