Evansville -
The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team was projected to place 12th in the Great Lakes Valley Conference by the league's 16 head coaches in 2011.
Rockhurst University, the defending GLVC regular season champion, was predicted to capture the conference championship this fall. The Hawks, who visit Strassweg Field on October 7, collected 222 total points in the poll and 13 of the 16 first-place votes.
The Eagles, the all-time leader with 10 GLVC titles, are coming off a 12th-place showing in 2011. USI was 5-11-2 overall, 4-9-2 GLVC, in its fourth season under Head Coach Mat Santoro.
The 2012 USI squad is comprised of 34 players – 22 returning players and redshirts and 12 newcomers. Junior forward Rush Dugger (Hanson, Kentucky) is the Eagles top returning scorer with 20 points on nine goals and seven assists.
Senior midfielder Austin Andrekus (St. Charles, Missouri) was second a year ago with 18 points on six goals and six assists, while senior forward Jeffrey McClure (Indianapolis, Indiana) was third last fall with 17 points on five goals and a team-high seven assists.
Rockhurst, which lost on penalty kick in the GLVC Tournament semifinals last year, was followed in the poll by defending GLVC Tournament champion Quincy University, which was in second place with 189 total points. The University of Indianapolis, Lewis University and Bellarmine University rounded out the top five.
The 16 GLVC men's soccer teams will compete in a 15-game round robin schedule during the regular season with the top eight teams earning a berth to the GLVC Championship Tournament. The top four seeds will host quarterfinal matches on campus on October 28 with the four remaining teams heading to the top remaining seed's site for the semifinals and final on November 2 and 4, respectively.
