HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) -
It's important to remember to be extra alert on the roads as you head out the door today.
It's the first day of school for several students in Kentucky.
Parents have many concerns as they send their students back to school.
Make sure if you've got a little one, dress them in light colored, loose clothing as the afternoon temperatures are still expected to be very hot.
Also, here's something to keep in mind, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta says it's very important to monitor the weight of your child's backpack.
It may not be heavy on the first day, but as the days go by, they say your child's backpack can become dangerously heavy.
They say it should weigh less than 15 percent of the student's body weight.
They say to help your child know what this weight feels like, use your bathroom scale to measure the right backpack load.
In response to heat advisories issued by the national weather service three bottles of water per person will be in stock at each school. At school dismissal, students riding the bus or walking home will be offered more water.
Daviess County and Owensboro Public School Districts also start today.
