Local homeless veteran talks about new program

Posted: Updated:

A federal grant announced on Tuesday could help dozens of homeless veterans in the Evansville area find jobs and get off the streets.

It's called the Homeless Veterans' Reintegration Program and it's a grant through the U.S. Department of Labor.

It's one of only two of these grants awarded to non-profits in the Hoosier state, and for those with no place to go, it could be the answer they've been looking for.

"There's nothing here really, I mean nothing.  Nothing at all.  At least that I've been able to find.  It's very hard around here," said homeless veteran, Jeremy Holtzclaw. "I can't find a job. I've lost my home. I'm separated from my wife and kids."

We came across Holtzclaw minutes after the announcement of HVRP, a federally funded program through the Echo Housing Corporation to help homeless vets.

For Holtzclaw, it was a meeting that didn't come by chance.

"I can't tell you how much it would help.  I mean, it's like the answer to my prayers.  That's what it would be," Holtzclaw said.
The program's goal is to help 48 homeless veterans in the Evansville area.

"We're going to make sure they stay employed.  We're going to help them secure transportation and we're going to find them housing," said Executive Director of Echo Housing Corporation, Stephanie Tenbarge.

"If we have the ability through this grant put them to work, make them productive again as part of our society, I think that's a great thing," said Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke.
Program director, Darryl Garmon is an Air Force veteran.

"At any given time in this area, you will find there are at least 50 homeless veterans on the street," Garmon said.
And for those like Jeremy, it may be a chance to gain some peace of mind.

"A lot of us won't seek out help or anything, but if by chance you do know somebody who can help them, please do so. Please," Holtzclaw said.

The program is in partnership with Work One agencies and local businesses who will receive financial incentives for hiring vets.
