TUCSON, AZ (CBS5/AP) -
The husband of former Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords said he and his wife are satisfied with a plea agreement for the suspect in the Tucson mass shooting.
Jared Loughner had a competency and change of plea hearing in federal court Tuesday where a judge found him competent and Loughner pleaded guilty to shooting and killing six people and wounding 13 others, including Giffords.
Giffords' husband, Mark Kelly, said the pain and loss of the Jan. 8, 2011, events are incalculable. But he said avoiding a trial will allow the couple and the southern Arizona community to continue recovering and move forward with their lives.
Kelly released the following statement on CBS News, "We don't speak for all of the victims or their families, but Gabby and I are satisfied with this plea agreement. The pain and loss caused by the events of January 8, 2011 are incalculable. Avoiding a trial will allow us - and we hope the whole Southern Arizona community - to continue with our recovery and move forward with our lives."
Loughner's plea Tuesday allows him to avoid the death penalty. He is expected to be sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Loughner has spent more than a year in a federal medical facility in Missouri being treated for mental illness.
