EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility has submitted its first draft of the state and federally mandated integrated overflow control plan (IOCP) to the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Justice and the State of Indiana, yesterday.

The plan outlines long-range goals and actions to significantly upgrade Evansville's sewer system infrastructure, improve operations and reduce water pollution.

The effort to implement the plan, called Renew Evansville, will be one of Evansville's largest capital improvement projects in the decades ahead.

The Utility met its July 31 deadline to file a draft plan, in accordance with a consent decree between state and federal regulators, the City and the Utility signed in November 2010.

"We are diligently moving forward during the next few months to finalize and obtain EPA approval of our plan to improve the sewer system in our city. I want to thank the team of engineers, Utility employees and the citizens advisory committee members for their help in creating this first draft," Allen Mounts, director of the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility, said. "We are also eager to collect public comment, and we will continue to augment and refine this first draft in the months ahead."

The draft plan is available online at www.RenewEvansville.com, and public meetings will be scheduled later in the year, providing residents the opportunity to comment on the plan and ask questions.

The Utility must submit its final IOCP to the EPA by Nov. 30, 2012.
