OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) - The Owensboro Dragon Boat Festival kicks off this weekend. It's the second year for the event and organizers say it's going to be bigger and better this time around.
The event was a big hit last year, and this weekend, they've doubled the amount of boats that are racing.
So far there are over 20 teams signed up, and there's a total of 4 boats racing.
There's three different divisions: recreational, competitive, and a women's league. Each team races against other's in their division for the first two heats. The top eight will then compete in one final race to determine a champion.
The race is 250 meters and as you guessed, they'll be competing in dragon boats.
Teams are required to have a minimum of 16 racers, and costumes are encouraged for team spirit.
Even if you're not racing, there will be live cultural entertainment that includes music, dancing, and even martial arts. There will also be food vendors at the festival.
The race will be held on Saturday at English Park in Owensboro.
Practice sessions actually began Wednesday and will finish up on Friday as teams prepare for the big race starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
