OAKLAND CITY, IN (WFIE) -
Oakland City Police are investigating a hit and run accident where a driver fled the scene after crashing into two vehicles in a Jackson Street neighborhood.
The family members who own the cars are just thankful they weren't in their vehicles at the time of the hit and run.
"Luckily my mom wasn't backing out of the driveway when it happened," said vehicle owner Patrick McConnel.
McConnel says several of his family's vehicles were parked in the driveway on Trusler Street. He says he thinks the accident happened around 3:30 Tuesday morning.
"That's when I heard the noise outside, which I thought might have been thunder or something like that," McConnel said.
McConnel's mother was getting ready to leave for work when she saw the pile up on her fence along with the suspect's vehicle.
"She ran in the house and woke me up, and said my cars been hit and the truck, the person's truck was still there," McConnel said.
Oakland City Police say the suspect's car couldn't be driven, so he ran off. Police believe the suspect was driving on Jackson Street and made a sharp turn onto Trusler.
"The truck came in and hit the side of my car. My car was parked parallel to the house, and then it slid over, hit the fence, and then hit my other car in the driver side door sliding it into the fence," McConnel said.
By the time McConnel's brother saw the vehicles, police had already called a towing company to separate the cars and keep the suspect's vehicle for evidence.
"I couldn't believe it did that much damage to it. That's unreal," said McConnel's brother, Nick Rodocker.
McConnel couldn't drive either one of his cars and says he spent the day trying to explain the hit and run to his insurance company.
"They are like you have two cars in this accident?" McConnel said.
Oakland City Police still looking for the person registered to that vehicle. They say they suspect alcohol was involved and say the person might be injured.
