DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE) -

A lightning strike damaged a tornado warning siren in the Daviess County community of Whitesville.

Officials say the siren should be back in working order soon.

A bolt of lightning hit the tornado siren on Highway 54 in Whitesville. Daviess County Emergency Management tells 14 News when they went to test the siren, it wouldn't work. They say lightning fried the system.

EMA officials hope to have the tornado siren fixed by the end of the week. They say it all depends on when the parts come in.  Luckily, EMA says it's not expecting any severe weather anytime soon so hopefully it won't be an issue.

"They're steel, they're on top of a tower, and there's an antenna hooked up to them.  They are prone to lightning.  We have surge suppressors and grounding.  Everything we've done but from time to time we'll lose probably on average one a year," said Walter Atherton with Daviess County EMA.

While the siren isn't working, EMA encourages you to check on weather through other outlets like television and radio.
