Customers have power to cut energy bill costs

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Some customers are shocked by their most recent energy bills. They can blame the heat wave.

However, utility companies say customers have the power to help cut the costs.

This most recent bill will likely include those 11 days over 100 degrees in July and we aren't even at the hottest time of summer yet. But with some tips, Vectren says customers can lower their bills by one to three percent.

"Perfect timing to move into your first house, I know," said Chris Kerner.

Kerner, a first time home buyer, just moved into his home on the east side at the beginning of July, and during one of the hottest summers on record. This year we've had 49 days at or above 90 degrees and 14 days at or above 100 degrees.

"The thermostat is broken so we haven't been able to turn it a little higher than we want to keep it at. We are kind of scared of how expensive the first bill is going to be for us," Kerner said.

Vectren recommends keeping your thermostat no lower than 78 degrees.  For those who need a new thermostat, there is a $20 rebate for a programmable one.

"For every degree that you turn your thermostat up and sustain it for an eight hour period of time, you can save one to three percent on your energy bills," said Vectren spokesperson, Brandy Spainhoward.

Kerner is keeping his blinds closed and ceiling fans on counter clockwise to try to conserve. Another tip is to replace your air filter and check your outside unit.

"A lot of people don't think about their outside air conditioning unit but give that a check and see if there are any leaves, grass, or debris that are attached to it. Blow that off, rinse that off, that will help it circulate better," Spainhoward said.

Also minimize the use of appliances that generate heat.

"This will be our first Vectren bill, so hopefully it's all downhill after this one," Kerner said.

Kerner is set to have at least two very high electric bills. Vectren says August is their highest usage month.

Vectren can also set up payment plans if you have trouble paying your bill. You can also call Energizing Indiana to get a home assessment and ways your home may be losing energy.
