HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) -

A new program is making it easier for Henderson county high school students to go to college.

It's called the "Rotary Colonels 2 College Program" and its first batch of students will soon be heading out to college.

The Henderson community college campus may have been just a dream for some high school students before, but the rotary colonels 2 college program is changing that.

Susanne Wilson, HCC Chief of Fundraising said, "Thought it was something that could help our community and it was a way to offer educational opportunities to students that maybe otherwise couldn't afford the opportunity to go on to college."

students can enroll in the program their freshman year.

As long as they meet the criteria, they can go on to be selected to receive a $2,000 per semester for two years.

"This program opens doors for students, they can get their two year degree so they can transfer or technical degree," said Wilson.

All together there are about 400 students in the program, and the first batch will be awarded scholarships this spring.

"We've had huge support from the community," said Wilson.

They've already raised two million dollars for the scholarship, and are just $500,000 short of their goal.

Wilson said, "That has come from individuals. It has come from businesses, civic organizations like the rotary club, who basically took $250,000 and donated that to the program."

they hope to keep that momentum going for years to come.

Incoming freshmen can still sign up to be part of the program. All they have to do is see their counselor and ask about the program.
