Wreck near northbound twin bridge in Henderson causes major traffic snarl

Posted: Updated:
HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) -

A rear-end crash is caused a blockage of the northbound lanes of the US 41 Twin Brides at Henderson.

Northbound traffic was for about an hour to allow the crash site to be cleared.

The crash and resulting snarl backed traffic up into the US 41 North Henderson Strip business district.

Meanwhile, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Henderson County Highway Maintenance Crew has completed cleaning and maintenance work on the northbound lanes of the US 41 Twin Bridge.  The northbound lane restriction required for this work is being taken down at this time.  The northbound bridge is ready for normal traffic flow providing the crash site can be cleared.

Due to the completion of this work ahead of schedule, no northbound lane restrictions will be required on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a contractor plans NIGHTTIME lane restrictions on the SOUTHBOUND bridge from approximately 7:00 p.m., tonight through about 6: 00 a.m., CDT, on Tuesday.  The contractor also plans an overnight lane restriction on the southbound bridge on Tuesday night starting at 7:00 p.m.

Provided the night work is completed as scheduled by Wednesday morning, maintenance crews are tentatively planning a daytime lane restriction on the SOUTHBOUND bridge starting at 8:30 a.m., CDT, on Wednesday for cleaning and maintenance work.

The US 41 Twin Bridges, also known as the Bi-State Viet Nam Gold Star Memorial Bridges, are located at US 41 mile point 19.649 about a mile south of the Kentucky-Indiana State Line.  They carry approximately 37,000 vehicles per day across the Ohio River between Henderson, KY, and Evansville, IN.

The bridges are located about a mile downstream from the confluence of the Green River and the Ohio River at Ohio River navigation mile point 786.8.

The northbound bridge was opened to traffic on July 4, 1932.  The southbound bridge was opened to traffic in December 1966.
