KENTUCKY (WFIE) -
21 recruits from throughout the Commonwealth reported to the Kentucky State Police Academy in Frankfort on Sunday to begin an intensive 26-week training process designed to prepare them for duty as KSP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers.
"Operating as a division of the Kentucky State Police, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers play an important role in keeping our roadways safe," notes KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer. "Through education and safety awareness, they encourage and promote a safe driving environment among motorists and monitor commercial motor vehicles for compliance with both state and federal laws. As sworn law enforcement officers with the power of arrest, they often work side-by-side with Kentucky State troopers at crash scenes and drug interdictions as well as taking part in criminal investigations, traffic control and emergency response."
The first day's activities for the class included a variety of physical fitness tests such as weight lifting, sit-ups, push-ups, a 300 meter run and a 1-1/2 mile run.
The cadets represent the following Kentucky communities: Auxier, Calvin, Campbellsburg, Clarkson, Frankfort, Franklin, Greenville, Hindman, Lebanon, Lexington, Louisa, Louisville, Mount Vernon, Pikeville, Richmond, Shepherdsville, Staffordsville, Whitley City, Williamsburg and Winchester. One cadet is even from Harrogate, Tenn.
Six of the cadets have prior military experience. Three have earned bachelor's degrees and three have completed associate degrees. One has experience with the KSP Facilities Security Branch.
