15-year-old injured during ATV accident

PIKE CO, IN (WFIE) -

Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an all terrain vehicle accident that occurred at around 5:00 p.m. Friday afternoon near Velpen in Pike County.

The 15-year-old victim was operating an ATV up an incline near his residence when the vehicle went airborne. The victim was thrown head first over the handlebars and collided with the ground.

He knocked unconscious and the victim was taken to his residence where his mother transported him to Jasper Memorial Hospital. X-rays showed he had sustained a skull fracture. 

He was then transported to Kosair's Children's Hospital in Louisville, KY for  further treatment.

He was not wearing a helmet or any other safety equipment.
