UPDATE: Garbage fire at landfill in Daviess County, KY

DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE) -

It was just after 5:00 Thursday morning when firefighters responded to a fire at the Daviess County Landfill.

We got on scene shortly after and caught up with the Assistant Chief of the Daviess County Fire Department Steve Fuqua.

"Everything about this is being tough right now," he said.

He's referring to the combination of strong winds, hot temperatures and dry conditions.

Not to mention, it's garbage that's fueling the fire.

"They pack it down really tight and anything that's packed up really tight whether it be hay bails or trash. Once it gets on fire, until you loosen it up or smother it, it's a really difficult process to put it out," Fuqua said.

Firefighters worked to smother the area in dirt using bulldozers.

They also attacked it with water, having to pump extra water from nearby lakes.

Fuqua says the area will have to be babysat for at least a few days.

"It will just be a process of someone being here, monitoring the situation for hot spots and flare ups. It's a labor intensive process. It's going to be a strung out process. Someone will probably be here tomorrow still looking at it."

About 15 firefighters were on scene to begin with.

Yellow ambulance service set up a rehab center to keep them hydrated and paramedics were on scene checking for heat and smoke related illnesses.

Officials aren't calling the fire suspicious because the landfill is locked overnight.
