Some showing support for former mayor

Posted: Updated:
CORYDON, KENTUCKY (WFIE) -

Another meeting is going on Wednesday night in Corydon discuss what's next after Mayor Larry Thurby was removed from office Tuesday night by the city council.

People are back at the community center where the meeting is just getting started. The city council's attorney Chris Wischer says the group had 30 days to fill the position of mayor, but they fill it on Wednesday night.

Corydon City Council elected council member Hilda McCormic to fill Thurby's vacancy.

After four hours of public comment both for and against the mayor Tuesday night, Larry Thurby was removed from office. Wednesday morning, some community members gathered outside City Hall with signs posted on their cars in support of the former mayor.

"I fully support the mayor," said resident Cheryl Holmes. "He's done more for this town than anyone. We have a Dollar Store, we have a clean park, and we have clean streets."

Wednesday, signs were posted at City Hall saying it's "Closed until further notice." Some residents are frustrated at the inconvenience and wondering when their bills will be processed.

"We have shut-offs coming up soon. Like today, actually," Holmes said.

The city council had seven charges against Thurby, including misconduct and neglect, after a state audit last year found more than $80,000 missing from the city. Some Corydon residents tell 14 News the whole situation is embarrassing to their community and are just wanting the whole thing, they say, behind them.

"They're hurting us. Not just the mayor, but they're hurting us and our community," Holmes said.

The mayor's attorney had not returned our calls before the meeting. Henderson County Circuit Court says, at this time, Thurby has not filed an appeal.

We'll have an update on this meeting coming up tonight at ten.
