CORYDON, KENTUCKY (WFIE) -
A new chapter is opening for the city of Corydon, Kentucky.
Less than 24 hours after ousting Mayor Larry Thurby, the town's city council has appointed a new interim mayor.
Wednesday night, city council members voted to have Hilda McCormic fill the position left open by Mayor Thurby.
"I think they made a great decision, great decision. In time maybe we can get the city back to where it was," said a Corydon resident.
Some Corydon residents applauded the city council's appointment.
Hilda McCormic is a former Interim Mayor of Corydon. She's served on city council several years, and has lived in the city since 1964.
"My goal is to make the city more fiscally responsible and stable," McCormick said.
On Wednesday night, the city council defended its position of removing former Mayor Thurby.
The city council listed seven charges against Thurby including misconduct and neglect.
"I just feel like he was no longer competent and qualified to do the job," said Corydon City Council member Beth French.
Attorneys say McCormic's appointment is only temporary. A special election in November will be held to fill the remainder of Thurby's term.
"Citizens of Corydon will have the ultimate choice in the short matter of time," said Chris Wisher, the attorney representing the Corydon City Council.
McCormic says she's not sure if she'll run in that special election. For now, she's just focused on getting the city through the next couple months.
"I hope we can have a little quiet time and little come back together," McCormick said.
"I think if she gets in here and she gets things going, I think it will be like it used to be," said a resident.
McCormic says she plans to be bonded and take her oath Thursday morning so she can take office by the afternoon.
McCormic's position on city council will now have to be filled.
As for former Mayor Larry Thurby, he has 30 days to file an appeal.
