VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) -

Evansville Police are investigating several cases of identity fraud and theft at the Vanderburgh County Health Department.

Investigators say five employees recently had their personal information stolen and some accounts were opened up.

Right now, police don't think any computer programs with personnel or payroll records have been compromised or hacked.

Police say they don't have a suspect or suspects and the investigation will involve current and former employees.

As far as the public, police tell 14 News, they should not be worried about their information being at risk.

"There's no indication at all that any of their information, the general public or a patient to the health departments, has been compromised. This was strictly something of employees there which that's going to help us narrow the focus on the investigation," said Captain Andy Chandler with the Evansville Police Department.

Police say you should never keep your ID, other documents with your birth date on it, or your social security card in the same place, like a wallet or purse, in case it is stolen.

They say never give personal information to anyone you do not know over the phone or through email.
