EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

The United Caring Shelter in Evansville has initiated their Red Flag program for the rest of the summer.

It will be in effect on any evening following a day when there has been a heat advisory or excessive heat warning issued for Vanderburgh County.

Those with no place else to stay can go to the shelter starting at 8 p.m. and stay until 7 the next morning.

Cold water and snacks will be provided.

Executive director of the shelter Kimron Reising said, "We know that there are a lot of folks out there sleeping in their cars, sleeping in abandoned buildings, under bridges, behind dumpsters and so for those folks it's really important and could be life saving for them to be able to get in here at night rather than to have to stay out there."

The shelter is on Igle Street between Fifth and Sixth Streets. Last night was the first night of the program, and we're told 15 people stayed. The shelter director says they are in need of twin size sheets.
