DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE) -
A Kentucky county is selected as a pilot district to participate in a new statewide kindergarten screener program.
Starting this week, kindergartens in Daviess County will be undergoing this entry screener.
It's called the Brigance Kindergarten Screen and the goal is to provide tools for measuring a child's skills in order to identify those who need additional help in order to succeed.
The tests are pretty basic, while covering a wide range of concepts. They include recognizing upper and lower case letters, identifying body parts and colors, and also basic motor skill tests.
Results are expected sometime towards the end of August.
Teachers will then use that to help in their daily instruction.
One other goal is to provide opportunities for parents to share information with each other to enhance the relationship between parents and the school.
School officials say it's important to know this isn't a pass-fail test, it's just a way to help students in their learning from an early age.
The screening will take place at the majority of the elementary schools throughout the county starting today and going through the beginning of the school year.
