EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

A local dog rescue opens Evansville's first no-kill rescue shelter Saturday.

It Takes A Village Canine Rescue says it's been an organization for about two years, taking care of dogs through foster homes.

Now, they have a new facility on north Stockwell Road.

The rescue says it's an emergency facility to house dogs when not enough homes are available.

Saturday, the group held outdoor activities for the community to help celebrate.

"Evansville, as many communities do, has a large problem with homeless pet population. So, we were created in order to help reduce the homeless pet population. We are no-kill, which means we do not euthanize because of lack of space," said Susan Gainey Odoyo.
