MUHLENBERG CO., KY (WFIE) -

Construction is underway on new turning lanes for several roads in Muhlenberg County.

There will be an extra lanes on US 62, Kentucky 181 at US 62, and Kentucky 171 intersection.

"Especially in the afternoons when school's getting out, businesses closing down for the afternoon there tends to be some backup here in the area," said Clint Cobb, who works near the construction zone.

Local store owners Clint Cobb and Tori Gettings say this project is a big relief because their stores are just down the road from one of these intersections. They say just adding one turning lane will make all the difference.

"The parallel parking issue is rough. A lot of times when I try and pull in out front, there's cars backed up all the way down the street and it makes it hard to park," Gettings said.

County and City Officials pushed for this project to speed up traffic throughout the area and reduce accidents.

"That'd be a big improvement, big convenience for people that travel this area all the time," Cobb told 14 News.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Officials are urging residents to avoid the area if possible until construction is complete. Gettings says once work is finished, she thinks business might actually improve.

"I think with less cars, there a lot of people may pull in and park and walk up and down the streets a lot more."

This is just the latest project where the city of Greenville has seen improvements downtown.

Over the past couple years, a major sidewalk renovation took place and residents say there's more of a buzz downtown, especially adding events such as Saturdays on the Square.

"Buildings were run down, people were not downtown and now with the improvements the city has made, the city administrators and community has done a great job putting this thing together, makes you glad you're from here," Cobb said.

Construction should be finished by mid December.
