With the hot and dry weather hampering crops this summer, Tri-State Food Bank is worried about the impact it will have on food donations. The Food Bank relies on local growers and community gardens for fresh produce during the harvest season and with fewer crops to donate, it could have a devastating effect on people in our community needing food assistance.
During the summer months, demand is high when kids are out of school. The families that rely on the free and reduced lunch program during the school year for their children need more food in their home and pantries are already having a hard time keeping up with the need.
It could be a two-way hit for the food bank if rain does not come soon. Not only will food donations dry up with the crops, but supply and demand will likely cause an increase in the cost to purchase food to make up for the loss of donations.
The Food Bank is trying to close the gap with extra donations from the community. We are always in need of non-perishable items like peanut butter, breakfast cereals, canned meats, and pasta. Tri-State Food Bank provides food to an estimated 114,00 people annually through a network of over 250 feeding programs, including 170 food pantries, 80 local soup kitchens and shelters throughout 33-counties in the tri-state.
We also address the needs of local "at risk" children through our Weekend Back Pack-Food for Kids program, providing over 2,000 kids each week nutritious meals for the weekend.
