HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A Hawaii photographer's spontaneous smooch is going viral.  The kiss between Dallas Nagata White and her husband has been featured in a number of major media outlets. The Huffington Post, Gizmodo, The Atlantic and Glamour all have posted stories describing how the photo was taken.

Nagata White tells Hawaii News Now that she was hiking with her husband and a group of friends near the Royal Garden Subdivision on the Big Island when they decided to take a photo.

"While waiting for the rain to pass, we started taking back-lit portraits of each other in front of the lava flow after I set up my camera on the tripod. For the last photo, my husband spontaneously dipped me in a kiss. It was a truly once-in-a-lifetime moment!" said Nagata White.

What makes the photo even more amazing, there was no fancy Photoshop manipulation.  Nagata White says she slightly adjusted exposure, color, and contrast, then sharpened the image after re-sizing for web.

"While this photo was originally taken for ourselves in a spontaneous moment during a fantastic adventure with our friends, I'm glad so many people around the world are enjoying it," says Nagata White.

The photo has been entered into 24th annual National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest, voting for the Viewer's Choice award is open until Friday, July 20, at 9 a.m.

Nagata White's group was aware of the cultural significance of the area. The group used Kalapana Cultural Tours, which is permitted to take visitors over the lava-covered private and state property for lava viewing.
