HENDERSON, KY (WFIE) -
The State of the County Address was made Thursday in Henderson.
One of topics discussed was the addition of some places for outdoor family activity.
Thursday at Henderson County's annual State of the County Address, a main focus was nature.
Judge Executive Hugh McCormick says next year, there will be a new community park in Baskett, part of the county's plan to have a park in magistrate districts one, two and three.
Something needed, McCormick says, due to more families not being able to afford out of town trips.
"Doing something around the house, having family get togethers, and we want Henderson county people to have a place to get together," McCormick said.
Also at the address, the Audubon Wetlands group awarded a Hometown Heroes award. Robbie Williams, a partner with Audubon Wetlands, Incorporated, says the group formed to obtain 649 nine acres of land near Audubon State Park for a six-mile wetland trail.
"It's a unique opportunity because of the flat topography," noted Williams.
Those trails, Williams says, are being designed with wheelchairs in mind with one of the group's partners, designing the trail from a wheelchair.
"With an iPad and google earth, he's been navigating the trails."
Williams says Audubon Wetlands created a permanent easement on the property before gifting that easement to Friends of Audubon. He tells us the group is also working with the county road department. A project, the county says, will benefit the entire community.
"It's awesome. It's something a lot of people come together to do," said McCormick.
Audubon Wetlands tells us those trails aren't yet open to the public.
They tell us they hope to have over three miles of trail cleared by this fall.
