EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

As part of a new federally-funded learning program for grades K through eight, local teachers are being trained on more hands-on teaching techniques, in Wesselman woods.

The program's Regional Director Deborah Vannatter says this is a professional development program for K through eight teachers.

She also says it's a 10-day institute involving nearly 80 teachers from the EVSC, Evansville Diocese, and Joshua Academy Preschool.

Vannatter says the goal of the training is to show teachers new ways to practice life sciences in the real world, since the government believes hands-on learning techniques are more effective than a traditional classroom approach.

"Science isn't something you just read about in a textbook and memorize a few things and take a chapter test in two weeks. The students from kindergarten through eighth grade are actually doing science to learn science. So the teachers are learning how to facilitate that," Vannatter told 14 News.

Vannatter says area students should see these same outdoor teaching lessons, next school year.
