Health Department to spray SE side after more West Nile evidence is found

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

The Vanderburgh County Health Department will begin spraying for mosquitoes this week in Evansville, after finding more evidence of the West Nile virus.

The county says it found the west nile virus on Evansville's south east side, so they're going to spray for mosquitoes Friday night.

The machine puts out a fine mist of insecticide to kill off the mosquitoes.

The area they're focusing on is between Covert Avenue and Bellemeade, and Alvord Boulevard to Vann Avenue.

Keith Goy with the health department says while we're seeing fewer day-biting mosquitoes this year, the type that carry West Nile love dirty, trashy water and he says that there's plenty of.

"When we fog like this with the insecticide, it is because the health department feels that using the insecticide outweighs the problems with insecticides is better than the problem the west nile virus is posing to the public," Goy said.

The adulticide spraying operations are set for Friday between 8:00 p.m. and midnight.

The Health Department is urging everyone to take precautions outdoors, especially between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are the most active.
