GIBSON COUNTY, IN (WFIE) -
A 14 news update now on a Gibson County crash that killed a woman and a 16-month-old child. We now know the name of the woman.
She is Diana Mayo of Francisco.
Mayo's car flipped into a creek just east of Princeton on County Road 350 east, about a mile south of State Road 64 as she was taking her boyfriend, Shawn Robling to work.
These fatalities make up the sixth and seventh fatality in Gibson county this year, already more than all roadway fatalities last year in the county, an alarming trend not just in Gibson County but the entire state.
Nationwide law enforcement says they generally see more accidents in the summer months, but this year has been extremely dangerous.
"To have seven fatalities in six weeks, those are very startling numbers," noted Gibson County Sheriff's Deputy Brad Garnett.
And Gibson County isn't alone. According to Indiana State Police, so far this year, there have been 413 fatalities on roadways. That's 46 more than this time last year.
"Anymore, I think, as a society, people are just in a hurry," Garnett added.
Although the Gibson County Sheriff's Office has upped its patrols, deputies say there aren't any trends as to why, where or what time of day these crashes are occurring.
"When you look at the crash causation, as far as what is causing it, it's not just one single factor. I mean, looking at them, you've got speed, aggressive driving, driver inattention, there is a lot of different factors that have gone into play as far as what has been causing these crashes."
The sheriff's office says alcohol and drugs were involved in only two of those Gibson County fatalities.
In the latest accident on County Road 350 east, the sheriff's office says the driver swerved to miss something, veering off the roadway, overturning in a ditch, killing the driver and a 16-month-old child, Nakia Robling.
"I think people being astute and aware that our roadways can be deadly, just to take precautions, just be aware of what's going on around you."
Robling was able to get out of the vehicle and is listed in fair condition at St. Mary's Hospital.
