Two Midlands fishing buddies are celebrating the catch of a lifetime after reeling in a 127-pound tarpon over the weekend.

Bobby Mack, with the help of his father-in-law, Jody Hutto, caught the massive tarpon in the Beaufort area near Lady's Island. The two, along with their wives, were vacationing in the area.

They say it took about two hours to get the monster fish inside their small jon boat.

Amazingly, Bobby was able to fight the fish and land it in using regular fishing line, not the heavy duty line usually needed to catch a fish of this size.

According to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the saltwater tarpon record belongs to S. B. Kiser who caught a 160 lb. 10 oz. tarpon in 1987 near Hilton Head

Adult tarpon typically range between 40-60 pounds. They typically inhabit near shore waters including bays, sounds, or estuaries.

Family members say the men regularly fish together all over the state. Neither has ever reeled in a fish this large.
